Picnic – About the summer of 1953

This is not a very good photograph (very underexposed) but I wanted to post it because of the subject matter and location. This was one of our little family outings for a picnic. However it is only over on Route 7 from the farm. This was the little wayside across from Dr. White’s house that Granddaddy built, where what is now Canby Road came out to 7. It was typical of Virginia at that time and was like the places we used to stop along Route 11 when we went down the Valley to Bristol or Lebanon, just a picnic table or two and a 55 gal. drum for trash. Jackie of course, under the guise of helping Mother, is over into the food while the rest of us are waiting patiently at the table.

Per Jackie's request

I was talking with Jackie (Well someone has to do it) about the old photos, and she said that she liked this one if I could scan and post it. So here it is. I will also post the scan form the photo on Mother's wall before I "worked" on it. When I converted to black and white from the sepia, I was able to adjust the contrast and it really improved the result.

How about one of John

This was taken in the small enclosed porch at Grand Daddy's and Grand Mother's on the farm. It was off of the small hall next to the bathroom and the kitchen. I always thought of this with a caption like "Coming into the laboratory we surprised Dr. Frankenstein at work on his latest project." As a side note the box on the right (John's left) says Colonels Pride Apples, Hill High Orchards, Round Hill, Va. This was also the room where, at times, the old newspapers were tied with baling twine and kept for a paper drive.

Okay, one of Elizabeth

This one is even in color. I don't remember which cat this was, but the photo was taken in the year that Elizabeth started into school. (Correct me if I'm wrong, Elizabeth.)

Thomas with his leg casts

These were the casts that were put on to straighten out his bowed legs. The original brace that the doctor put between them was no match for the little boy, and Dad had to reinforce them with a piece of angle iron that he taped on. As you can see that didn't fare too well either. When they went to saw the casts off, Thomas "freaked" out because he thought they were going to cut his legs off.

An old photo of me and Jackie

This is from back in Winchester. The leggings and coat should be a clue that it's not Florida. I don't know why I was holding a comb. Mother said that when she would want to brush my hair I would go hide under the bed. Maybe from the look on my face I was planing on combing Jackie's hair. Jackie seems to be distracted by her coat sleeve. Must have been something on it that she was getting off.

Another old photo of the young "Mark Twain",.......

....Scott of course. Here he is in his best "Sunday go to meeting" clothes with a chicken bone in his nose .. er, mouth. This was in the front yard where we were having an at home picnic next to the Linden tree.

An Old Photo

Going to try to start posting some of the old family photos. (We'll see how that goes.) Here is one of Louise, Mother and Eddie in Purcellville in the mid 1920's. I cropped it and "cleaned" it up some with my solfware. If anyone wants a higher resolution copy let me know and I will email it.

Food Police

Looks like the "Food Police" were out at the Family Pizza/Salad Birthday Party.

Recognize Her?

She did it again and didn't have to use that stinky reverse perm in a box that her aunt had to mess with long, long ago.
